In July 2017, I was asked to design a room set for Grand Designs Live at the NEC in Birmingham. The brief was to create a room set based upon a TV show, I decided to design a Sherlock inspired scheme. One thing I really wanted to portray was the mixture of old and new, to reflect the Victorian detective in the 21st Century setting. I did this by using lots of wooden furniture that's reminiscent of Victorian design but use pieces with a modern, industrial edge. The beautiful wooden contrast with soft velvets and contemporary accessories and colours. The colours in this design are quite daring, but I really wanted to push myself. I decided to use mustard yellow as it was such an on trend colour at that time and it’s a colour I don’t normally use. Another huge trend was velvet, I really wanted to use a purple velvet sofa within my scheme to add luxury and drama.
